CHAPTER 13

The organic scream of the nightmare song seeped into Anvi's consciousness, and immediately fear silenced her quiet song. Empathy flowed as thoughts imagined the terror the creatures must have been experiencing to create that noise.

Rocking in her shell, squirming, vibrating, she quelled the urge to thrash and fight the restraints. Powerful thoughts of the possible mistake she might just have made ran through her mind.

The simple singer of the other organized songs would hear the evil noise as well. The singer would run, hide, and disappear. If they did not, they would be doomed as well.

A vibration came from below, rising through the sand into her cage, and then through her sensitive skin. Listening and feeling through the shell, a sound grew from far away but growing stronger. It culminated into a subtle, shuddering quake across the desert before stopping moments later.

Anvi checked the umbilical again, obsessing over its hold on her, hoping that even this small amount of vibration had dislodged it from the death grip of the shell, but it remained.

Fear flooded through her body as she felt additional tremors. They were timed, heavy shifting of the sand far away. She tuned into the feeling, amplifying it. There was something massive moving in the distance.

It was big. Bigger than anything that she had heard move before. Bigger than her, and it was moving.

Anvi listened closely, every nerve fiber, every part of her being concentrated on the external noises. She listened to where the sound was moving. The shifting sand in the distance scrubbed against her amplified ears. She tolerated the sliding noise as she tried to get a bearing.

The shell moaned, amplifying the noise, and Anvi relaxed back away its bulk.

The noisy movement of the shifting sand was sliding in a direction away from her cage. Maybe it would continue to move away. It was unrealistic to hope for that. For a moment, there was a reprieve.

Eventually, given enough time, the giant noisemaker would come this way, and then the hunt would be over.

Stuck in this shell, she would be helpless; easy soft prey for whatever attacked. There would not be much effort needed for something that big to overpower her.

Letting panic take hold again, she thrashed, burrowing painful furrows in her soft skin from the broken shell. The small space gave her a teasing sensation of liberty, but nothing substantial enough to prove an increased degree of freedom.

This partial birth would be her undoing.

Calming down, Anvi forced herself to become rational.

She focused on what she was doing. Any movement she made would just attract others to her flailing. If the invisible nightmare moving around on the surface could be heard, it stood to reason that the thing might hear her too.

Among Anvi’s limited experience was the knowledge that predators would wait until they could hear the sounds of a weakened animal. She had observed this through the cracks of her shell, watching as the nearby beasts pounced on the easy meal of the wounded creatures.

Frustration and fear welled up again.
